How it works

MiniBooks is an iPhone app that connects to your FreshBooks account, letting you take FreshBooks on the road, and to your clients. There’s no need to constantly be connected to the internet, it will sync your data when a connection is available so that you can access your data offline.

Problem with MiniBooks Lite App is not being able to select the 3 clients for testing. Because the program selects the 3 clients, it gave me 2 archived clients and one that doesn't require timers/tasks - so it means making up tasks/timers then deleting it. Not to mention I can't see how invoicing/payments will work with an active client

Works great for me. I use this app when I am on the road and it works very well. It does not do everything that you can do at your computer, but it does enough to make it very handy and useful to keep things running well..

DOES NOT WORK!! The Estimate form sends my client an estimate for $0.00 every time. There's no way to control basic features. It's a nice idea, but I'm affraid it just doesn't work well enough to rely on.

To John's list of limitations I would add the ability to record a payment, but it won't sent a payment thank you email, even if you have it set up in your account to do so.

Android fanbois, consider that this person might just be an iPhone specialist, so releases an app and you're irritated that the Android app makers haven't copied him? Seriously, put the blame where it should be.

For anyone reading the ratings, invert the Android-wanting ratings. They wouldn't be making such a fuss if they didn't want the app so badly.

**WARNING!** Just got off the phone with FreshBooks support. They advised me to remove Minibooks from my iPhone as they have confirmed that the Minibooks developers are no longer supporting it and it is corruping the FreshBooks Expense Data..

All Android complaints... go somewhere else.

The app works great. Just some minor feature revisions too make it complete... for instance, I would love to see the dashboard that tells you log in details. I would also like to see more payment details from paypal and google checkout...

Aside from those two tiny things, it's a great app. Wait.. you don't have it for Android? Boohoo. Go get an iphone.

First of all, for the Android users this is the wrong venue to complain about the non-existence of the Android app. It's quite absurd that you're all skewing the results by giving the app one star even though you've never tried it since you don't have an iPhone. Instead of complaining pool some money together and hire a developer or email the developer of this app directly.

The app works quite well for consulting/freelance type people who are on the move and need to bill clients and keep track of time on the go. I work for a landscaping company where we have hundreds of line items with prices and descriptions already in Freshbooks and the fact that this app doesn't utilize that is a negative. It also doesn't pull in default terms. I did email the developer and he told me that this was a limitation of Freshbooks' API. I think this app is a great start and is worth the price depending on your needs.

WARNING! DO NOT USE THE INVOICE OR EXPENSES SECTION. MINIBOOKS WILL CORRUPT YOUR ESPENSES DATA IN FRESHBOOKS! This has been confirmed by FreshBooks Tech Support. This app needs to be fixed or pulled from FreshBooks Addon page! Whenever you open an Invoice that contains expenses, it will revert all those Expenses from Invoiced or Recouped and mark those expenses as "UNBILLED":!!! I have hundereds if not thousands of Expenses that have been recouped or invoiced that are now being reported as "Unbilled" on Freshbooks' Expense page!!! Freshbooks has no way of helping me correct them!! I see a Class Action Suit against the Minibooks company.

At first glance, this looks good. Good enough to pay an enormous amount of money for the paid version (seriously, it's a lot of money when you compare it to everything else you can buy for iPhone).

But sadly, while the app is glossy, it absolutely fails to deliver any real information. For instance, you can see your clients, but not their projects. I can see invoices sent, but I can't get an overall amount owed by the client. It lets you record time but doesn't show how much time has been recorded for a client. You can generate an invoice but you can't import time logged into the invoice. The list goes on.

I'm also pretty sure that the developer has moved on, so I'm not expecting any of these issues to be resolved but I'd be ecstatic if they were. Based on the price, there's a fair chance that the dev made enough money to go on holiday somewhere and then decided not to come back.

In New Zealand, this app is $18.99. That is $18 more than it should be. If it was $0.99 then I would think it's great but as it is, it is truly a waste of money. Go and buy a couple of pizzas, at least you'd enjoy yourself briefly.

Just paid my $15 for this app.

I'm in two minds. It's great, and pretty much does what it says, but the glaring faults cannot be overlooked - ESPECIALLY the ability to choose the contact to send the Estimate / Invoice to once you've chosen the client / company you want to create one for.

Also the ability to keep Estimate / Invoice numbering going from the last ones created would seal the deal.

Can the developers even read these comments? Hope so! Potential is there!

This app appears to have been abandoned by the developer. Look elsewhere for your iOS-to-Freshbooks solution.

MiniBooks is a great app which I use on a daily basis, HOWEVER, there have been no updates for months and it doesn't support iOS multitasking which sucks. Groovysquared's website has not been updated since August 2010.

I'd like to recommend MiniBooks, but can no longer do so.

I read somewhere that the devs replied that they are "too busy" on other projects to maintain MiniBooks. Nice, thanks guys.

I was excited to see the open sourcing of the Freshbooks app (http://www.freshbooks.com/blog/2009/01/05/were-open-sourcing-our-iphone-time-tracking-app-for-macworld/) and then presumably morphed into MiniBooks. Given the lack of many updates, I'm sorry that the source in GIT hasn't been updated since 09 so comparing current features and code changes to the 2 year old unavailable app is still useful, but not nearly as much so. Which also kills a lot of opportunity for some nice feature additions.

A bunch of peeps clearly got Android's over the past few months. This app was made by Groovy Squared, not Freshbooks. Not fair really to give it one star based on them not porting it to another platform (yet).

I'd love to see this ported to Android.

This app is freakin' sweet. I've use it almost every day for the past year, mainly for the Time Tracking, Expenses and entering Invoice payments . I do wish you could use it to generate new invoices of unbilled hours. I believe the lack of this feature is due to a limitation in the Freshbooks API.

One thing to note is that this App is rarely updated so if you're badly waiting on a feature not yet implemented, don't hold your breath. That said, what is there is quite extensive and rock solid.

Every time I go to purchase this (4 times now) I'm stopped by the price tag. I know $18 isn't much in the scheme of things, but compared to other apps it is. I think the $10 would be better.

Great start, but missing some stuff like:

1. Entering in a payment for an invoice does not send a notification to the client.
2. The Vendor list for expenses is not carried over into the app.
3. I cannot set an expense to be recurring.

I've emailed the app developer but they've been "swamped" and "couldn't make any promises".

Been a user of Freshbooks for ages! NEED a Android Version please! 5 Stars for Freshbooks.. only 1 for cross OS compatibility. I look weekly on my droid to see if there is a version to download and use when not using my PC.

This program is absolutely awesome. It played an instrumental roll in winning me back to the iPhone after a brief stint on Android. I can truly stay in control of my business's billing, payment, and time tracking from anywhere. It does not sound like a big deal but being able to post payments and create invoices and estimates on the go is useful on almost a daily basis. I literally did not know what to do when I was without this program for a few months. Thanks for making my life so much easier!

It's simple and useful - particularly when picking up payments. I'm able to input them into the system and deposit them through an ATM on my way back from the clients - saves me the extra trip every time.

If you run a business and tell us $15.00 to pay for a time and billing app you are either a competitor just jelous of this company or you really aren't a business person at all.

My time is worth $200hr. This app can save me 2 minutes per invoice so it pays itself off before the first day of use and before lunchtime.

What do you even do for a living? If u r this dense or cheap I can only imagine how much you cut corners with your clients

I saw this application on the App Store and suddenly decided to switch to Freshbooks. I had been using another web application to do invoicing which did not have as many features. However, being able to add clients, create invoices on the go (or rather just view them), and time tracking plus expenses is literally worth every penny.

They now have a lite application which works with the FREE Freshbooks account, but the paid version is highly worth it.

luuave it all, yet a couple of things would make it leading and a true no brainer:

1. allow for attaching HQ pics of expense receipts (+perfecting the synch with FB expenses..);
2. allow for multiple FB accounts (indeed!)
3. show (daily or selectionable period) time total (avoid time leakage, etc)
4. extend on-the-go invoicing capabilities (convert estimate into invoice and vice versa.., allow for x% office costs [if necessary just as composite 'tax', so that the VAT hits this line item as well], allow for project time import..!)

Great app! But please add the ability to add more FreshBooks accounts. I use two separate FB accounts on a day-to-day basis and I'd love to be able to manage both without having to log out and enter my API number for the next account.

I love it app I used it almost daily, for me it was the prefect solution. I admit that I only bill once a week so no invoicing on the phone was not a big deal to me at all. Great app and a very good way to keep track of all the un-billed time. As soon as I arrive onsite and start the timer.

Not very useful unless you want to pay the really high sticker price of 14.99. If you have a lot of clients the lite version only supporting 3 clients is pretty useless.

I thought it would be great to have with me but at 15.00 I'll just find a web browser, oh wait my phone is a web browser and freshbooks works just fine on safari :/

Responsive to feedback to come up with the new update. Keep up the good work! Currently, this version does not support multiple contact from the same company which means that we cannot send estimates to 2nd or 3rd person other than the primary contact. Please work on this to perfect this app.

I was excited about this app at first. It was the main reason I decided to switch to an iPhone and was the first app I purchased. But, except for the timer, I've been very disappointed.

It's a good App for checking your invoices and clients while traveling but not for invoicing on the go which is the whole point of mobile apps. Great timer but only if you bill your customers on a weekly or monthly bases from your office. If you want to get paid on location at the time of the job, then you have to stop the timer, get some paper out, write down the time, then delete that time (don't click on submit) Then you can open the new invoice form and enter the time you wrote down on the piece of paper. No I don't do this, I just open my calculator and figure it out and send them a receipt as paid later from my office. But this is insane and I cannot believe that they left this feature out!!

Lack of expenses!! So my client has an emergency and I have to go to a local store to buy goods/parts for that customer while on location. No way to enter the expenses until I get back to the office. Sure, I can open Safari on iPhone, go to my Freshbooks website and painfully slowly navigate my way to the expenses to enter them on that little screen. But that's what the Apps are made for, to speed up entries. Don't understand why Minibooks refuses to update their app!? Their delay has caused competition and now there is another app called ExpenseBooks for adding expenses. So MiniBooks has no excuse as to why they could not add expenses. But I hate the idea of having to use two apps for FreshBooks! It's my main Pet Peeve with the iPhone, no multi tasking!! Takes too long to juggle between two apps.

Sorry I paid $15 for this app when I could have just used their lite version for free. All I ever use on this App is the timer. If MiniBooks decides to update their app to include Invoicing Timed jobs and includes the Expenses, then I will gladly give this app 10 stars!!

The main thing I want to do on the run is enter expenses, and this app doesn't support that. I'd rather do invoicing from a bigger screen, and while I do appreciate the time-tracking features, I usually am at the computer already when I have work to track... so for me, the only thing I really want badly is to log expenses via the app. Can we get that soon?

I'd pay for this app--and upgrade my FB account too--*IF* it supported creating invoices from logged time. You can create an invoice, but, apparently, then you have to manually enter the times. With the web-based verison of FB, you can create a new invoice and have it auto-populate from your project's times. If MB supported this feature, I'd be on-board in a heartbeat.

We use handhelds b/c we're always in a hurry... always running around somewhere.. and probably don't have anything set up right to start with.

Just got this App. It does not allow you to create invoices from time sheets (a much needed function for those of us in the service industry). Other than that it is a good app overall, but the price is a bit steep for an app that is missing some fundamental features.
I am anxiously awaiting the updates!

I've recently purchased this app which works extremely well.

I couldn't give 5 stars based on:
- the application doesn't support the scenario when one has two or more accounts with Freshbooks. For example - I run two separate companies but am unable to manage both with the app.
2 - staff is able to view and send invoices using the online version, but not with the iphone app - one instead gets the message "You do not have access to invoices".

I finished at my clients office at 3:30. My client needed an invoice before close of business. I wasn't sure I would make it back to my home office in time. I downloaded MiniBooks, logged into my FB account, setup my clients contact info, created an invoice & emailed it - all from the parking lot, all in under 10 minutes. From now on - Invoices go out minutes after the work is done. Awesome.

It would be better if it pulled the last INV number & auto-incremented when creating a new INV.

This is one of the first apps I installed on my iphone, but I am sadly disappointed. The only thing I really really want in the on-the-go iPhone app is he ability to enter expenses. When will this feature be included? Thanks!

I have to say that I am quite disappointed that this app is missing the ability to add Projects & Tasks on the fly. Also I agree with Kit Allen on the on-the-go expenses system.

I will buy the full version once these things are present in this application. Until then keep working on it guys, you are almost there!

Lovin' MiniBooks - it was one of the first apps installed on my new iPhone and has made tracking time on my current Projects so easy.

I would have rated 5 stars if it only allowed me to list and create new Projects, and also see how much time has been accumulated on existing Projects. Surely this feature is possible too?

I eagerly await the next update. Keep up the great work!

Love it. Definitely worth the price. But totally agree with Eric: I've wanted an on-the-go expenses system since I started using Freshbooks, and it's so frustrating that this has everything but!

I've been looking for a decent iPhone app for FreshBooks and found this one. It's exactly what I was looking for. Now I can invoice everybody I see without having to get in front of my computer!! I just made one up right now for writing this review!

Seriously though, it's got a great interface, it's slick at enabling you to efficiently manage clients and invoices. Great job. smile

Been using Freshbooks since the beginning of 2009 and like it so far. I was just lamenting the lack of a better app to manage Freshbooks (the old time tracker deal was not good for me) and what do you know, there is Minibooks. I thought about it for about 43 seconds and then bought it. It is great using it all over the place and helps me invoice on the fly. Wish there was a accounts total like the home screen. Awesome job, it just keeps getting better.
